Six members of the Silver Spring Village Chess Club visited Avalon to face off against a spirited assortment of Avalon’s Chess Club members.
Traci Tang, Co-coordinator of Avalon’s club and mother of Elijah (5th) and Zeke (K), discovered this senior chess group at a local restaurant. In a stroke of genius, she inquired whether they had any interest in playing against a ragtag band of ruffians — an offer they could not refuse.
Boys from 1st through 9th Grade faced off against these fearless senior citizens. It was a wonderful event, giving our scholars the chance to engage with local community members over a shared and ancient pursuit. Our boys did a fine job welcoming their guests, who we hope enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did. It was the sort of occasion that could rightly be counted a charitable work for both parties, and one we very much hope to repeat.
