Avalon graduate Josh Pitsenberger (’22) is headed to the NFL. The Bethesda native has signed with the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent following a record-setting career at Yale University.
At Yale, Pitsenberger established himself as one of the most productive running backs the program has ever seen. As a senior, he ran for 1,571 yards and 19 touchdowns on 313 carries — each of those numbers ranks among the top three single seasons in Yale history. With 16 catches added in, his 1,699 all-purpose yards stand as the third-best single-season total ever for a Bulldog, surpassed only by Rich Diana’s legendary 1980 and 1981 campaigns. He finished his college career as Yale’s second all-time leading rusher with 3,435 yards and 41 rushing touchdowns.
The signature game of his college career came on November 29 against Youngstown State, when he ran for a personal-best 209 yards and punched in the game-winning score in a 43–42 comeback victory.
His final season brought a wave of recognition: the Asa S. Bushnell Award as the Ivy League’s top offensive player, a unanimous First Team All-Ivy selection, and a finalist nod for the Walter Payton Award, given to the top offensive player in the FCS. He also picked up All-America honors from the AFCA, Stats Perform, FCS Football Central, and the Associated Press.
Off the field, Pitsenberger served as captain of Yale’s Team 152 — a fitting role for a young man whose leadership has been a hallmark since his days at Avalon.
The Avalon community is proud to celebrate Josh as he begins this next chapter in Houston. Go Texans!
