The Avalon School celebrated the power of language and performance during its annual Middle School Poet Laureate Competition, held February 26, 2026—an “Afternoon of Poetry” featuring student recitations that showcased memorization, poise, and a love for great verse.
Moderated by Headmaster Kevin J. Davern, the event was judged by Elizabeth Kantor, Jeff Kantor, Jack Boyle ’20, and Bob McHale. Students delivered a wide-ranging selection of poetry, honoring Avalon’s tradition of rhetoric and poetic recitation.
At the conclusion of the program, Avalon announced this year’s award recipients:
- 6th Grade Winner: Martin B.
- 7th Grade Winner: Desmond P.
- 8th Grade Winner: Tobias D.
- Honorable Mentions: Virgil P. (6th), Sam O.(8th)
Desmond P. was named the Overall Winner and 2026 Middle School Poet Laureate.
The Avalon School extends sincere thanks to families for supporting this rich tradition, and to those who helped coordinate the competition and sustain the school’s enduring commitment to poetry, memorization, and public presentation.
