Calvert House Head Michael Connolly joined Avalon’s faculty last year after more than a decade on Capitol Hill. This year, he is heading up the Middle School Writing Program, a rigorous new composition curriculum for all seventh and eighth graders. In addition to Middle School composition, he also will teach ninth grade Medieval European History and coach Middle School basketball and baseball. Prior to teaching at Avalon, Mike wrote speeches for the Speaker and Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives, former Congressman Henry J. Hyde, the House Judiciary Committee, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. A graduate of Virginia Tech, where he studied English literature and political science, Mike and his wife, Ellen, live in Falls Church with their sons Patrick (Avalon ’24) and Ignatius (Avalon ’25).
